Troubled Brits abroad: in pictures

7 Sep 11

The Foreign Office has used Google Earth to show the volume of calls received by its staff.

The Foreign Office has used Google Earth to show the volume of calls received by its staff.

The programme offers a geographic breakdown of the 3952 incidents handled by British embassies, high commissions and consulates on 27 June, 2011.

Malaga in Spain handled by far the most enquiries, with almost 400 calls. Other hot-spots included Abu Dhabi, Athens, Cairo and Hong Kong. According to an accompanying video, incidents during the period ranged from seven arrest cases involving alcohol and financial problems in Dubai, to an enquiry from a man in Greece on licences for keeping chickens.

The Google Earth layer and video can be viewed here, in addition to an infographic showing the top 30 countries where Britons have been arrested and the proportion of those that were drug-related.

As International Adviser reported this month, the Foreign Office has published its British Behaviour Abroad survey for 2011.
