PJ Hayman, the specialist travel insurance provider, has introduced coverage that pays policyholders for medical costs and other expenses that arise from their elective treatment abroad.

Conditions under which the plan would pay out include loss of one or more limbs or eyes, disablement and even death – though baggage delays of more than 12 hours and travel expenses resulting from the loss of a passport are also covered.

The new plan comes at a time when, according to the Treatment Abroad health tourism web site, an estimated 100,000 UK nationals are reported to be travelling abroad annually for cosmetic and elective surgery and dental treatment.

The Free Spirit Travel for Treatment Insurance range, as it is called, is aimed at UK expatriates resident in the European Economic Area and the Channel Islands.

PJ Hayman founder and director Peter Hayman said that although the new insurance range was available to UK nationals resident in Britain it was particularly useful for expatriates.

“It is vital that anyone considering treatment abroad ensures that they have full insurance cover and is aware that standard travel insurance schemes do not provide this,” he added.

Based in Hampshire, England, PJ Hayman & Co was founded in 1990 and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Crispin Speers & Partners, the London-based Lloyds insurance broker. Its flagship product is Free Spirit (www.free-spirit.com), a travel insurance product aimed at those with pre-existing medical conditions and disabilities who are typically refused cover by other insurers.

More information on PJ Hayman’s new insurance for “international medical tourists” is available at www.FreeSPIRITtravelfortreatment.com.
