Steve Webb knighted in New Year’s honours list

3 Jan 17

Former UK pensions minister Steve Webb has been awarded a knighthood for political and public service in the Queen’s New Year honours list.

Former UK pensions minister Steve Webb has been awarded a knighthood for political and public service in the Queen’s New Year honours list.

Webb, who is currently director of policy at Royal London, has been a member of parliament for almost two decades.

During his tenure as minister of state for pensions between 2010 and 2015, Webb introduced the “triple-lock” pension guarantee and implemented auto-enrolment into workplace pensions. The latter has resulted in seven million people newly saving for retirement. Webb was previously professor of social policy at Bath University specialising in poverty, taxes and benefits.

Meanwhile, a number of other high-profile individuals awarded for their contribution to the financial service industry, Schroders head of public policy Sheila Anne Nicoll was also awarded an OBE.

Nicoll, who worked as the Financial Services Authority (FSA) director between 2007 and 2013, then moved to EY as a senior adviser before being hired by Schroders.

During her time at the FSA, Nicoll was instrumental in the UK’s Retail Distribution Review (RDR) and last funding review of the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). She left when the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) was created.
