PEOPLE MOVES: Man Group, BMO GAM, Ostrum

By Kirsten Hastings, 3 Apr 18

A Wall Street heavyweight has joined Man Group, while BMO Global Asset Management has made three senior hires to bolster its socially responsible investing and Ostrum Asset Management has hired an equity chief investment officer.

Man Group

Investment manager Man Group has named Wall Street heavyweight Zoe Cruz as non-executive director for the firm’s remuneration committee, effective from 1 June.

She joins with more than 35 years’ experience, having once been ranked as Fortune’s highest paid female and included in Forbes’ most powerful woman list from 2005-2007.

Cruz spent 25 years at Morgan Stanley, during which time she was nicknamed the “Cruz missile” and “Czarina” for her unstoppable nature. She was co-president of the investment bank between 2005 and 2007.

After leaving Morgan Stanley, Cruz continued to climb up the Wall Street ladder and founded Voras Capital Management in 2009 and ran it as chief executive until 2013.

She now heads up her own single-family office based in New York, EOZ Global.

BMO Global Asset Management

BMO GAM has appointed Alice Evans and Claudia Wearmouth as co-heads of the governance and sustainable investment (GSI) team. The firm has also bolstered the team’s presence in the Netherlands with the hire of Pieter van Stijn.

Evans and Wearmouth will be jointly responsible for further integrating the consideration of ESG issues across investment teams at the asset manager.

Evans returns to BMO GAM having previously worked at the company from 2010 until 2016, when she was co-lead manager of the responsible global equity fund alongside Jamie Jenkins. Prior to joining the company in 2010, she gained 10 years of investment experience at Henderson Global Investors and JP Morgan Asset Management.

Wearmouth joined the company in 2007 and has worked with the investment teams and most recently as the lead on the responsible fund range as director in the GSI team.

In addition, van Stijn has been named a director in the GSI team. He has over 18 years’ experience in the industry, spending the last 11 years at PGGM as a senior advisor for responsible investment.

Prior to this, van Stijn was a sustainable investment analyst at SNS Asset Management and worked as a policy adviser at Wissenraet & van Spaendonck.

Ostrum Asset Management

Jean-Louis Scandella joined Ostrum AM, an affiliate of Natixis Investment Managers, on 3 April as equity chief investment officer.

He was previously head of equities at Barings Asset Management in London.

Scandella is tasked with bolstering European and emerging market equity capabilities, as well as repositioning the expertise range to deliver the highest possible investment outcomes for clients.

He will supervise equity portfolio management teams based in Paris and Singapore, with assets of more than €23.6bn (£20.7bn, $29.1bn) managed on behalf of institutional clients, individual investors and distributors.

Janus Henderson Investors

Andrew McCarthy has been appointed to Janus Henderson Investors’ European equities team in London. He will work alongside John Bennett, head of European equities, as co-manager on its European long-only funds and mandates.

He joins Janus on 9 July.

McCarthy previously worked at USS Investment Management, where he was a portfolio manager specialising in industrial and consumer sectors.

Mazars

International accountancy and advisory firm Mazars has made two senior appointments to lead its tax teams in Birmingham and north west England.

Andrew Spence, partner and head of tax for Birmingham, has a broad range of experience advising clients from all backgrounds through previous roles at EY and National Grid. Spence will lead the various teams providing proactive commercial tax advice to private individuals, local entrepreneur and non-profits.

Andrew Westhead, partner and head of tax for the north west, will be based in Manchester. He joins from Grant Thornton where, as a tax partner, he worked in Manchester, Leeds and London. Westhead has worked with clients of all sizes, and has particular expertise in advising entrepreneurial businesses and private clients.
