The CNBC primetime special, Back in the Game, sees host and former major league baseball superstar Alex Rodriguez help former NBA star Joe Smith get back on his feet after having lost almost all of the $60m (£42.6m, €48.8m) he earned in his career.

According to CNBC, the show is the story of a pro athlete who goes into retirement and suddenly ends up in financial free-fall.

“With no more games to play or big paychecks to cash, the future can often look bleak to those athletes struggling to adjust and adapt,” says Rodriguez

“I am determined to find a way to build up Joe’s confidence and get him back on solid financial footing,” he added.

“You think that when you sign that contract you are going to be an automatic millionaire,” said Smith, who now has $3,000 in the bank.

“The reality is Uncle Sam is going to take $1.5m of that $3m.”

Smith details, among other items, having spent $230,000 on an S-Class coupe, as well as houses and watches.

Athlete-turned-adviser Rodriguez is considered to be the greatest baseball player ever.

He is a 14-time All-Star ‘dream team’ pick and has been named as the American League Most Valuable Player three times.

Rodriguez has spoken of his volunteering work mentoring young players in money and sports management, but has been better known in recent times for his love life, having dated Kate Hudson and Madonna.
