Insurance institute trainees to sit home-based exams

By Robbie Lawther, 19 Feb 19

People will be able to sit tests from any quiet location where they have a live camera and microphone

The Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) is rolling out an initiative to allow professionals to take exams from any location with a secure internet connection, including from their own home.

Those studying with the CII will now be able to take exams remotely, saving candidates the time and trouble of travelling to an exam centre.

Candidates will be able to sit exams from any location providing they have access to a live camera, microphone, and a quiet and secure environment.

With these conditions in place, each candidate will be connected to a live invigilator who, supported by AI-based behaviour analysis technology, will ensure a fair and effective process.

Nicola Mellor, director of qualifications and assessments at the CII, said: “Remote invigilation goes a long way towards ensuring that our products are fit for the needs of tomorrow, in keeping with the changing professional and educational needs of our customers.

“As our customer base continues to grow, remote invigilation makes our qualifications more accessible to a broader range of people.

“We are committed to delivering relevant learning and using technology to support our candidates. Introducing remote invigilation demonstrates our ongoing commitment in these areas.”

An exam invigilator, or exam supervisor, is someone who is appointed by an examination board to maintain the proper conduct of a particular examination in accordance with the exam regulations.

The availability of the easily accessible exams

The service is available across six non-UK units, these are:

• AWP Award in Investment planning
• AWB Award in Bancassurance
• AWF Award in Financial Planning
• W01 Award in General Insurance
• W04 Award in Customer Service in Insurance
• WH1 Award in General Insurance (Hong Kong Only)

The CII is partnering with ProctorU, an online exam invigilation company which is based in the US, to deliver this new service.

ProctorU has over 10 years of experience and can monitor more than 1,000 exams per hour, allowing candidates to sit qualifications remotely all over the world.

It is able to mitigate many of the potential issues which could arise when exams are taken remotely, including providing support to exam takers, as well as verifying the identity of candidates, and protecting the integrity of the process.

Remote invigilation exams can be booked via the CII website, and incurs a £25 ($32, €29) fee in addition to the enrollment fee.
