crown dependencies hold first trilateral meeting

By Mark Battersby, 25 Oct 12

Senior ministers from Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man have held their first formal meeting to discuss areas of mutual interest since all three jurisdictions held general elections.

Senior ministers from Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man have held their first formal meeting to discuss areas of mutual interest since all three jurisdictions held general elections.

Jersey’s chief minister Ian Gorst, Guernsey’s deputy Peter Harwood and Isle of Man chief minister Alan Bell met today at Gatwick airport in the UK.

In a statement, the meeting was described as “as part of the Islands’ ongoing commitment to greater cooperation and communication.”

Discussions focussed on the current economic situation and public sector reforms in each crown dependency, as well as overseas aid.

Gorst said: “Since the elections, there has been a real enthusiasm to engage with each other and work together in areas that are of benefit to each island. I’m pleased that this has now been formalised with our first official meeting.”

Harwood said: “Guernsey, Jersey, and the Isle of Man, whilst separate and indeed competing jurisdictions in certain areas, face common challenges where working together benefits taxpayers in all of our islands.”

He added that this meeting followed the bilateral discussions held earlier this year with Jersey and the Isle of Man.

The aim is to hold the next meeting will be held in the new year.
