ozouf re elected in jersey

Jersey senator Philip Ozouf has been re-elected treasury minister, as the islands legislators ignored the chief minister-designates choice for the role.

Ian Gorst, who was elected chief minister last Monday, had named as his choice for treasury and resources minister Sen Ian Le Marquand.  However, Ozouf prevailed with a two vote margin, according to reports.

Ozouf, a Jersey native, has been treasury minister since 2008. During his watch Jersey has been the subject of considerable scrutiny by cash-strapped G20 nations determined to shut down “tax havens” in an effort to bolster their financial crisis-battered economies, and has seen its Zero-10 corporate tax regime examined by the EU’s Code of Coduct Group.

Most recently the island, along with Guernsey, saw the UK announce an end to a scheme under which Channel Islands mail-order businesses were able to sell low-value goods VATA-free to UK customers.

Other ministers elected on Thursday and Friday included Alan Maclean, who is to return for another term as economic development minister.

As reported, Gorst is succeeding as chief minister the retiring Terry le Sueur. He won the election by defeating Sen Sir Philip Bailhache  with 27 out of the 51 votes cast.
