hong kong regulator launches tv advert reminding investors of responsibilities

The Securities and Futures Commission has released an advert warning investors once they agree to an investment via an adviser they are saying they understand the advice given to them.

The advert, part of the SFC’s "Invest prudently: Signing means responsibility" campaign, was launched yesterday and is aimed at reminding investors of important questions they should be asking when purchasing financial products and encouraging them to take responsibility for these purchases.

Ashley Alder, recently appointed chief executive of the SFC, said: "While we have introduced new rules to raise standards of selling practices, it is equally crucial for investors to understand their rights and recognise their responsibility.

"To tie in with the enhanced investor protection measures, this TV advert campaign calls upon investors to consider carefully before signing any documents – an act of acknowledging responsibility for their investment decisions."

The SFC said the advert encourages investors to find out the basis of their intermediary’s assessment of their risk profile, to enquire about the rationale of the investment recommendation and to understand the associated downside risk.

The advert is a sequel to the SFC’s previous TV advert featuring Canto-pop song “Ask Me”. This time the song is re-arranged as the theme music for the advert.
