AES International has appointed lawyer James McLeod to its board as general counsel, responsible for corporate governance and risk management.

The advisory firm, which has offices across Europe and the Middle East, said McLeod’s role will involve the oversight of all regulatory, administrative and legal matters within the “many jurisdictions” it operates to make sure that the “highest standards are upheld, regardless of jurisdiction”.

Chief executive Sam Instone said: “As independent specialists licensed to provide investment and insurance advice in 34 jurisdictions, AES International has a truly global perspective and we are always looking for people of the highest calibre to join us in our mission to positively change international financial services.”

As with Instone and a number of other senior members of AES, McLeod begin his career in the military having been commission into the Scots Guards after leaving Oxford University in 1985. Following his military service, McLeod worked in the Ministry of Defence and then qualified as a solicitor in 2003. Working initially as an associate in the employment and pensions department at S J Berwin LLP, he later moved to specialist positions at both Herbert Smith LLP and Squire Sanders (UK) LLP.
