Top 10 countries for older people

Dramatic increases in the number and proportion of older people is a struggle facing countries around the globe. Researchers at Columbia University and the University of Southern California have developed a barometer to assess, using five social and economic indicators, which are the best countries to grow old in.

Taking all five indices into account, below are the top 10 countries for older people.

  1. Norway
  2. Sweden
  3. United States
  4. Netherlands
  5. Japan
  6. Ireland
  7. Denmark
  8. Germany
  9. Finland
  10. Spain

“Failure to adapt to ageing is a risky strategy for a country,” said Rowe.

“If we neglect to develop and implement effective policies we will be left with a society rife with intergenerational tensions, characterised by enormous gaps between the haves and the have-nots, and unable to provide needed goods and services for any of its members—especially a progressively older and more dependent population.

“The good news is this gloomy scenario is avoidable.”
