Last year witnessed a strong comeback for global equities after a challenging 2011, with the MSCI ACWI showing a total return of 16.1% when measured in dollars. Although this is an impressive gain, it masked that 2012 remained a year of ‘risk-on/risk-off’ trading where investors continuously reacted to developments in Europe, China and political trends in the US.
