soros and train clash on the football field

George Soros, Nick Train and Crispin Odey are three of the most respected investors plying their trade today - so why on earth do they have holdings in Man United, Celtic and Juventus in their funds?

In terms of performance, the funds have hopefully fared better than some of the football clubs, with the humiliation of Celtic (owned by Train) at the hands of Barcelona (privately owned) last night (6-1!) makes it an easier ‘sell’ than ‘hold’.

Manchester United, for example, is more than just a football club: it has a global reach, has a dominant presence in Asia, includes a number of different earnings streams and is a huge brand.

Yet it is not as dominant as it once was and there are plenty of alternatives so click here for just a few of them.
