Standard Chartered has promoted its former head of private banking for the UK & Jersey to the position of global head, SME banking.

In his new role, Tim Hinton, who succeeds Som Subroto who has been appointed regional head of consumer banking, South East Asia, will be responsible for “strategy and driving growth of the bank’s SME banking business” in 30 countries across Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

Hinton has been at the bank for more than 25 years, having joined in 1986 as a management trainee. Prior to his private banking role, he was head of local corporates, origination and client coverage in wholesale banking from 2005-2010.

Standard Chartered said its SME banking business delivered income growth of 14% year-on-year for 2011, with lending to SMEs up 9% year-on-year to $19.2bn (£12.17bn, S$24.25bn).
