Standard Chartered has hired Dan Azzi as chief executive of its Lebanon business, replacing Pik-Yee Foong who has left to join Hong Leong Bank in Malaysia.

Azzi, described by Standard Chartered as a “seasoned banker with global expertise”, is native to Lebanon and was promoted to this position from his previous role as regional head of global markets and co-head of wholesale banking for the Middle East, North Africa and Pakistan (MENAP), based in Dubai.

Christos Papdopoulos, regional CEO Standard Chartered MENAP, said: “Standard Chartered has a strategic presence in Lebanon and we see good potential for us to continue supporting its economy. This appointment comes as part of our direction to develop Arab Nationals to lead the Bank’s businesses in the region. Dan brings a wealth of experience to the role which will be important both in terms of driving our on-shore business and further developing our network business.”

Standard Chartered has been operating in Lebanon since 2000 and claims to be the first international bank to be locally incorporated there.
