Tiktok joins forces with UK charity on financial literacy

By Cristian Angeloni, 21 Jun 21

It will help ‘new audiences’ benefit from ‘timely, practical and tactical advice’

Social media giant Tiktok has partnered with Citizens Advice to create a series of short videos to help people better understand their finances.

This is part of the platform’s #FactCheckYourFeed campaign that was rolled out in May to help users “critically engage with content, navigate our platform safely and guard themselves against potential harms”, it said.

The initiative coincides with Citizens Advice’s annual Scams Awareness Fortnight campaign and will feature a series of videos looking to break down financial terminology and explain industry jargon, as well as helping users make informed decisions when it comes to their money.

This latest project is part of Tiktok’s push into educational content on its platform after making a “major investment” in the space last year.

“With more of us getting financial information online, it is important to us that we help our users to become confident and alert to financial misinformation, as well as how they can access the right support and advice,” the social media firm said.

Jessica Abelscroft, director of communications and engagement at Citizens Advice, added: “At Citizens Advice we offer free, confidential and impartial advice to millions of people every year – whoever they are and whatever their problem.

“We’re pleased to be working with Tiktok to help people make informed financial decisions. It’s an important part of our wider financial and scams awareness work, as well as reaching new audiences on Tiktok who we know could benefit from timely, practical and tactical advice.”
