Dark mode: Putting energy to better use

By Kirsten Hastings, 25 May 22

RL360 has turned the IA website dark for a day

You will have undoubtedly noticed something a little bit different about International Adviser‘s website today. Conventional thinking says wisdom is found in the light. But today, in partnership with RL360, we are turning that concept on its head – by going dark.

The rising cost of energy seems endless, and it is unlikely that we have ever been as aware of the price of a kilowatt hour or litre of petrol as we are now. But if the problems of today can teach us anything, it is that we need to reassess our use of energy. Not just because of rising costs, but the broader impact on the environment.

Many of us spend our days glued to a screen – laptop, phone, television or otherwise. Since the early days of the internet, black text on a white background has been the norm. But what if it didn’t have to be? What if the standard became a dark background and light-coloured text?

Team GB attributed their cycling success at the 2012 Olympic Games to marginal gains. Every fraction of a second they could save mattered – because they all added up to something greater. By helping us to go dark, RL360 is seeking to not only underscore its commitment to the environment but also remind advisers of how important it is to choose where they invest their energy.

RL360 marketing director Simon Barwell said: “Transforming International Adviser’s website into dark mode for one day highlights that we can all take small steps to improve our energy efficiency and reduce our carbon footprint, at a time when it has never mattered more.

“At RL360 we’ve already started to see step changes in investor behaviour and attitudes towards ESG investing, and this is just one way in which we can have a positive impact in supporting positive environmental and societal change.”
