threadneedle bulks emd team back up

28 May 12

Threadneedle has bolstered its fixed income team following the departure of former head of emerging market debt (EMD) Richard House, along with two of his colleagues, to join Standard Life Investments (SLI).

Singapore-based Clifford Lau has joined in a newly-created role of head of Asia Pacific fixed income, while Zara Kazaryan has been hired as an EMD fund manager.

Lau was formerly at Pramerica Fixed Income, the asset management division of Prudential Financial, and Kazaryan is moving from G2 Capital Partners, an emerging markets debt specialist, where she worked as a portfolio manager.

Threadneedle said the hires had been made as part of its fixed income restructure announced last month and should "significantly strengthen" its EMD capabilities as well as the depth of the broader global fixed income team.

As part of the restructure the firm established a global macroeconomic strategy group to better integrate macroeconomic strategies across developed and emerging markets, as it thinks traditional fixed income boundaries are increasingly less relevant.

House resigned at the start of April and subsequently resurfaced at SLI, along with Mark Baker and Nicolas Jaquier who worked in the Threadneedle fixed income team for six and two years respectively.

Jim Cielinski, head of fixed income at Threadneedle, said: "Clifford is an outstanding talent and his appointment in this new senior role adds an important dimension to our emerging market capability as well as supporting our growing Asia Pacific business.

"Zara is also a very strong addition to Threadneedle’s fixed income team. She brings in-depth knowledge of local emerging markets and securities, combined with macro-economic analysis."
