Axa IM poaches Goldman’s absolute return team

19 Sep 16

Axa Investment Managers has hired Jérôme Brochard and Hector Chan from Goldman Sachs as part of Pierre-Emmanuel Juillard’s new liquid absolute return team, named Axa IM Chorus.

Brochard, who headed Goldman’s systemic trading strategies team, and Chan, who served as head of Asia Pacific Ficc structuring, are now part of Axa IM Chorus’ 16-strong team in Hong Kong.

Other hires for the team include Harvard Business School professor of finance Augustin Landier as head of research; Ahcène Garèche from Marshall Wace as senior quant researcher and Philippe Muller from adtech company Criteo as chief technology development officer.

Juillard, managing director of the team, re-joined Axa IM in April also from Goldman Sachs where he was a partner and head of structuring in its securities division in Asia Pacific.

In his first stint at Axa from 1999 he was as head of financial engineering and asset and liability management studies.

To roll out next year, Axa IM Chorus will focus on building liquid absolute return strategies made up of what it sees as a range of carefully selected and combined premia ‘engines’.

The objective is to create a diversified portfolio with low correlation to traditional asset classes.

“With more and more data becoming available on economic activity, markets and individual companies, we are looking to identify and capture tradable premia ‘engines’ to create portfolios with a low correlation to the overall market and an attractive risk-return profile,” said Julliard.

“Our strategy will focus on using our clients’ risk budget sensibly to generate returns while offering them stability. This is particularly important now in the context of heightened uncertainty and volatility in global financial markets.

“We want to provide clients with an attractive solution to the risk-return trade-off, without losing liquidity and scalability.”
