Explore why your business exists

By Mark Battersby, 22 Jun 16

By understanding why we work in the financial services sector, we can introduce the ‘Woww’ factor into our professional lives, says Michelle Hoskin, founder and director of Standards International.

By understanding why we work in the financial services sector, we can introduce the ‘Woww’ factor into our professional lives, says Michelle Hoskin, founder and director of Standards International.

Understanding your Wow allows you to raise your bar and understand your ‘why’.

Why does your business exist and why should anybody care? The leader on the whole concept of Why? is Simon Sinek, who wrote the book Start with Why, which I highly recommend.

I’d like to share with you why I think it is so important to understand why you get out of bed every morning.

The most successful businesses on the planet don’t do it for the money, they get out of bed for something worth so much more, a belief that is so strong that they are prepared to knock down and overcome every barrier that gets in their way.

In financial services we hold the power to make a difference, the power to do something amazing, to do something that will change the world. But do you realise it? Do your team realise it and do your clients realise it? Does anyone really know why you came into this magical profession in the first place?

I could share with you a million stories and reasons about why my clients became financial advisers and planners, some very emotional stories but I am yet to hear any of them say they entered the sector ‘to make loads of money’.

Ask yourself the question. Ask your team, families, friends and most importantly your clients why they think you do what you do. You will be amazed at what they say. Then keep asking, pushing and digging. Like a child that is driving you crazy, keep asking why? Ask until there are simply no more answers to give.

For me, understanding my ‘why’ was one of the most exciting and rewarding journeys I took. Embrace it and have fun.
