"The anti-foreigner vote has won again and we now have xenophobic governments in the US, UK, Japan and Russia. Meanwhile in China President Xi Jinping has just been awarded the title last given to Chairman Mao - another liberal!

Trump can't possibly keep to his election promises and doesn't have many more friends in the Republican Party than he does in the Democrats so his policy will be constrained.

Markets are correct to fall as velocity of world trade will fall further and more infrastructure spending and less labour mobility will drive up wages. This should hurt bonds more in the medium to long term and fortunately for us we are very light corporate bonds and almost nil government bond exposure.

"We need to hear what Trump has to say and how big his win is before we can fully comment. The other thing to note is that Trump does not come into power until January and a lot can change between now and then."

Donald Trump has been elected the 45^th President of the United States, and the Republicans also look set to control the House and the Senate. The result of the vote has brought about a great deal of volatility in financial markets and after a sharp move lower in equity indices, many have begun to pare losses. Meanwhile perceived ‘safe havens’ such as core government bonds, the Japanese yen and gold have risen, but are off their earlier highs.

"Obviously this is a monumentous event that most pundits had not predicted. I think we need to wait and see what the global reaction may be and if this results in negative market sentiment.

The US will now go through a period of reflection and uncertainty, which no doubt will reflect on markets and market direction and this may affect our European clients our view on portfolio positions.

“Buckle up for a bumpy ride in the global markets. Whether president Trump will do what he has said he will do throughout his campaign, or whether it was just soaring rhetoric to whip up his support base, for now, Trump winning is sending shockwaves across the world. As such, enormous volatility can be expected in the markets.

“The Brexit result was a real shock and created instability in the UK. But this is a far bigger deal as this creates instability on a much wider, international scale.

“The markets’ main concerns include Trump’s protectionist policies, focusing on potential trade wars with China – America’s largest trading partner – and with Mexico, it’s third largest.

“In addition, with Trump having said certain countries are ‘cheating’ due to their undervalued currencies, currency tensions should also be expected.”

He continues: “Whilst some people are put-off investing because of volatility, many of the most successful investors welcome it. This is because major buying opportunities are always found where there are fluctuations.

“Fluctuations can cause panic-selling and mis-pricing. High quality equities can then, for example, become cheaper, meaning investors can top up their portfolios and/or take advantage of lower entry points. This all, in turn, means greater potential returns.”

Markets may be more volatile for a time, then again they may not. There will be many experts with varying and forthright opinions as to what the impact will be. Very few will end up being correct.

If nothing else, the result of the election is proof that trying to second guess major global events is a fool's errand, much like forecasting exactly what will happen to the market.

“There are two points I would like to make.

“The first one is Donald Trump is all ego and bravado, however, from the time he announced he would stand for president through to this point, it is my opinion he has come to terms with the seriousness of the position.

“As a result, many of the extreme views he has held will never see the light of day. I think he really does now feel for the poor or fortunates in America. It should also be remembered there are many checks and balances in the political system.

“A president actually has to go through senate and congress for major policies and he will be confronted with many voices of reason.

“The second point is Donald Trump, again in my opinion, is a much brighter man than the likes of George Bush Jr and the survived George W Bush.

“All in all, after an initial market reaction to uncertainty I believe the short term will not bring any major market corrections.”
