10 Apr 17

The first quarter of 2017 extended the hectic end to last year with plenty of macro and market events to keep fund managers on their toes. Here, based on data from FE Analytics, are the top 10 performing UK retail funds by three-month performance.

 8. Baillie Gifford Greater China – 14.8%

The £18m fund, run by Mike Gush and Sophie Earnshaw, invests predominantly in companies domiciled, incorporated or conducting a significant proportion of their business in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong – or companies whose shares are listed in these countries, with the authorised corporate director (ACD) will determine which companies meet the investment criteria.

The portfolio will typically invest in 40-100 names.

Rob Morgan, pensions and investments analyst at Charles Stanley said: “All Baillie Gifford’s Asia, emerging markets and global funds are run with a similar process, high-conviction philosophy and growth tilt.

“During such a bull market phase we would expect them to do well so it doesn’t surprise me they’re in the top 10 Q1 funds.

“Greater China having such high exposure to Taiwan suggests a heavier weighting to technology, so they may be a bit more valuation-sensitive.

“This is a structural story though, not a tactical play – tech and telecoms having done very well in March.”
