Best and worst countries for expats

Middle East

With no countries ranked among the top 10 destinations but three listed among the worst, the Middle East did not fare particularly well in the survey. The top ranked destination was Bahrain at 19, followed by Oman (22), Israel (36), and the UAE (40).

The UAE was the bigger loser of 2016, dropping 19 places from last year. Failing oil prices and extortionately high rents drove down expat satisfaction, with ground lost in all indices.

Kuwait was the bottom ranked destination in the 2016 survey, with neighbour Saudi Arabia (63) and Qatar (59) joining it in the bottom 10.

Kuwait has remained steadily at the bottom for three years running, the survey said. It even managed to go further down in each index this year, most notably in the ‘Working Abroad’ and ‘Personal Finance’ indices.
