Ashes Investment Blog: Funds, runs and the quest for balance

17 Jul 15

As with markets, so with cricket. After the variable bounce infused contest that saw Australia comprehensively beaten in Cardiff, the second test had started much more poorly for England on a road of a pitch at Lords – an indication of just how quickly things can change.

Equally, volatility is increasingly a feature of markets these days as investor sentiment is buffeted by all manner of winds, from the Greek crisis to a Chinese equity bubble, all of which are floating on an ever rising sea of liquidity. And, like the surprise withdrawal for personal reasons of Brad Haddin, it is likely to be the unknown unknowns that continue to keep things interesting, which got me thinking about how best to weather volatility both off and on the pitch.

To that end, I have compiled what I think is the strongest team that could be created from the 22 currently battling it out at Lords and their fund equivalents – in the hopes of finding something of a well balanced portfolio.

Caveat emptor, in cricketing terms I am an impartial spectator of the Ashes, but the same cannot be said when England play South Africa later this year. In terms of funds I don’t own any of them, but there is every chance I should.
