PEOPLE MOVES: HBSC, SFC, Manulife HK, Alexander Beard

Former Standard Life head David Nish joins HSBC’s board of directors, while Hong Kong’s SFC appoints new director of enforcement. Manulife Hong Kong’s hires former Axa executive to head up its IT operations.

HSBC

Former Standard Life chief executive David Nish has joined HSBC’s board as a non-executive director. He will begin his role 1 May for an initial three-year term and will serve on the group audit committee, with re-election in 2017.

A qualified chartered accountant, he ran the Standard Life from 2010 to 2015, receiving plaudits for driving the business toward asset management while cutting back operations that require more capital.

Nish left the UK insurer an investment group last year after six years at the helm, being replaced by former Edinburgh institution head, Keith Skeoch. He spent 16 years at Price Waterhouse before becoming group finance director of Scottish Power.

Nish currently holds non-executive director posts at Vodafone, London Stock Exchange Group, UK Green Investment Bank and, will shortly join Zurich Insurance Group.

Securities and Futures Commission (SFC)

The Securities and Futures Commission (SFC), the independent statutory body set up in 1989 to regulate Hong Kong’s securities and futures markets, has announced the appointment of Thomas Atkinson as the new executive director of enforcement.

Currently the director of the enforcement branch of Ontario securities commission in Canada, Atkinson will begin his new three-year tenure from 3 May.

He was the president and chief executive officer of the market regulation services from 2001 to 2007, and the vice president of the regulation services of the Toronto Stock Exchange from 1996 to 2001.

Manulife Hong Kong

Mark Van den Broek has been named as the new vice president and chief information officer of Manulife Hong Kong. His role will involve leading the company’s Hong Kong Information Service (HKIS) in the planning and implementation of IT systems.

Van den Broek has 18 years of experience in IT and operations. Before joining Manulife, he was regional chief information officer of Axa and spent more than 10 years with the company.

Alexander Beard International Benefits (ABIB)

Alexander Beard International Benefits (ABIB) has appointed Rüdiger Blaich as the new country manager for the company’s German operations.

Blaich will be responsible for developing ABIB’s international benefits services to local companies with workforces outside Germany, in particular the UK and Netherlands.

Before joining ABIB, Blaich worked as a consultant in employee benefits for more than 15 years, with his last post being a pension specialist for the Association of German International Schools (AGIS).
