The city state fell one place to fifth on the 2017 Mercer Cost of Living Survey.

However, in 2015, academics at the National University of Singapore’s (NUS) Lee Kuan Yew School for Public Policy made their own index to distinguish between living costs for expats and locals.

It found that Singapore was the fourth most expensive city in the world for expats but only ranked 48th.
